Description
Natural African Marigold Flowers for dying plant or animal fibers. Marigolds are one of the easiest flowers to use to create color. African Marigolds have large flowers, blooming in yellow and orange and will yield a yellow dye with a hint of green. French Marigolds have smaller flowers and result in similar color. Try dyeing marigolds and then overdye with Japanese Indigo to create green colors.
These all-natural plant dyes are sustainably grown on a small farm in the heart of the Ozarks. Some of these dyes are historic, used for hundreds of years by many cultures. Others are experimental, ones we have used in our dye kitchen and would like to share.
Learning as much as possible about individual dyes and variations of preparation of dye materials is recommended. We hope you enjoy using these natural dyes as much as we have.
When measuring ingredients, use approximately one half to one part dye material to one part fiber by weight. Dye materials can sometimes be steeped several times to create weaker dye baths, resulting in different hues from the same dye materials. Exhaust baths can also be used to increase usage of the natural dyes.
